Bid on The Cradle Project!

I got my first bid on my cradle I made for The Cradle Project.org!! I nabbed these pics from their flickr site with pics of all the entries. I've never had anyone bid on my art before, it's pretty cool...and mysterious. The bidding started over the weekend so it's the third day out of eight that the auction will run through. They got about 545 cradles donated out of the initial 1000 goal the project aspired to. That's pretty good if you ask me. The cradles are awesome too! The most well known artist to participate in the exhibit/auction is Judy Chicago! I was excited when I looked through and found her name as one of the artists who donated a cradle. However, there is no picture. So, I looked online and found out she donated a painting of a cradle, still very cool. I bet the upper ups decided not to let that one get away :) Also, this is my first time participating in something of this nature and this organization is very professional and appreciative of the artists. I even got a hand written thank you letter from the person who developed the exhibit. Darn nice! Good experience and will totally be looking to donate a sculpture if they have this next year :)

Flowered Basket for The Cradle Project

I finally finished the sculpture for The Cradle Project. I used different colored and textured cardboard boxes. I just saved cereal, tissue, and other boxes for about 2 months. I used an oval base instead of my usual circles to be more representative of an egg in the mother's womb. Everything had to be scrap material so the stand is made from cereal boxes that are wrapped in grocery bags. Really, the only part I purchased was the oval base that acts as a stand and weight, which I wrapped in with grocery bag paper as well. It looks small in the photograph but the sculpture alone is 17 inches round and 7 inches tall. With the base it is 30 inches.

The Atlanta, Georgia Art House Co-op

So, I found this art house co-op in Atlanta while browsing online and it turns out they have some pretty cool things to offer artists. It's this little gallery/studio spaces they rent out to artists in downtown Atlanta. I signed up to participate in their "collecting objects" project. I will recieve an accordian folder from them in the mail and send it back with some personal affects inside. I can manipulate the folder in any way I choose. I have some ideas brewing as to what I will include. I plan on being very artsy with it! haha
The folders will be on display in their gallery area in March where people can come in and look through your folder to learn a little bit about you. I think it's a great idea and it sounds like it will be fun.

The Cradle Project

This summer I signed up to participate in "The Cradle Project" (www.thecradleproject.org). It's a fundraising installation that benefits orphans in Africa. They are looking for 1000 artists to make cradles to be auctioned off. The cradles that are made will be displayed in an abandoned warehouse in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I think they put up picture of the cradles too. You have to get your cradle sponsored, however I will most likely just donate the money myself, it's just $100 and it goes to a great cause. I occasionally show my art to the students I teach and I think this would be good to share with them. It shows them that art can be used to make a difference in the lives of others instead of just looking pretty. It's a good lesson in giving too. I'm excited!

Four Oceans Press

I am participating in the Winter 2008 print exchange for Four Oceans Press, a small press in San Fransisco. The theme is winter and I am submitting my linocut of the ice scraper for this exchange. I submit 26 of my prints and get 25 back from other people who have signed up. It's pretty cool. They also archive the prints on their site!
